About “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets”
Maggie: A Girl of the Streets is an 1893 novella by Stephen Crane, published when he was 21 years old. The story follows Margaret "Maggie" Johnson, an 18-year-old girl from the Bowery who turns to prostitution after being abandoned by her boyfriend, Pete Murphy, who leaves her for another girl named Nellie Griffiths. Her decision is also influenced by poverty and loneliness. The book was seen as controversial for its realistic portrayal of urban life and its themes. Crane published the original edition under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. After the success of his 1895 novel The Red Badge of Courage, Maggie was reissued in 1896 with significant revisions.
