About “Maqamat of al-Hariri”
The Maqāmāt al-Ḥarīrī is a collection of fifty tales written in the late 11th or early 12th century by al-Ḥarīrī of Basra, a poet and official in the Seljuk Empire. The stories follow the fictional character Abū Zayd of Saruj, who uses his talent for language to trick others and gain rewards. While less creative than the Maqāmāt al-Hamadhānī, it became very popular, with seven hundred copies authorized by al-Ḥarīrī during his lifetime.
