About “Marína”
Marína is a Slovak romantic poem written by Andrej Sládkovič in the winter of 1844 and published in 1845 in Pest. Alongside his work Detvan, it is seen as the height of his poetic achievement. The poem has been translated into German, Polish, Hungarian, and French. It combines elements of love poetry and reflective themes, as well as balladic elements, influenced by his sorrowful love for Mária Geržová. In 1845, the poem was criticized at a meeting of the Tatrín association for being too "un-Slavic," but it is now regarded as a central work of Slovak Romanticism.
