Marie is the first novel in a trilogy about the adventures of Allan Quartermain, written in H. Rider Haggard's later years and published posthumously by a friend. The story centers on Marie, a young Dutch girl living in Africa with her father and a tutor, who becomes the object of Allan Quartermain's affection; despite her father's hostility toward the English and opposition to their relationship, Allan and Marie marry, and she later dies attempting to save him from the Zulus.
