About “Masquerade”
Masquerade is a verse play written by Mikhail Lermontov in 1835. Set in the aristocratic society of 1830s St. Petersburg, the four-act play follows the protagonist, Yevgeny Arbenin, who is portrayed as rebellious and intelligent. The play's storyline is often compared to Shakespeare's Othello. Due to its perceived moral offense, Masquerade was banned for many years. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
