Matigari is a man who emerges from the mountains after the war for independence in an unnamed country, claiming to seek his family and to rebuild a peaceful future. As he searches, he encounters widespread corruption, dispossession, and suffering, leading him to conclude that only the use of force can achieve true liberation, prompting him to vow to fight against the oppressive forces that have betrayed the ideals of independence.
