About “Mitākṣarā”

The Mitākṣarā is a legal commentary on the Yajnavalkya Smriti, written by Vijñāneśvara in the late eleventh century. It was composed during his time at the Kalyani Chalukya court in what is now Karnataka. The text is most recognized for its theory of "inheritance by birth." Alongside the Dāyabhāga, it was one of the primary sources of Hindu Law when the British began governing India. The Mitākṣarā, together with the Yajnavalkya Smriti, spans about 492 pages.
