Fourteen-year-old Francis Tucket travels west on the Oregon Trail with his family by wagon train. After receiving a rifle for his birthday, he is captured by Pawnees while lagging behind to practice shooting, and must rely on wild horses, hostile tribes, and a one-armed mountain man named Mr. Grimes to survive and grow into the man known as Mr. Tucket.
