About “Muyedobot'ongji”
Muyedobot'ongji is a Korean martial arts text written by Yi Tŏngmu, Pak Chega, and Paek Tongsu. It was published in four volumes in 1795 and commissioned by King Jeongjo in 1790. The text builds upon the eighteen weapons systems outlined in the earlier Muyesinbo, which was published in 1758. Muyedobot'ongji serves as a continuation and expansion of earlier martial arts knowledge, providing detailed descriptions of various weapons and techniques. It was intended to standardize and preserve martial arts practices of the time. The work reflects the military and cultural priorities of the Joseon dynasty.
