In N.P., a novel by Banana Yoshimoto, a celebrated Japanese writer dies by suicide, leaving behind a collection of stories written in English. The book, also titled N.P., may never be published in Japan, as each translator who attempts the ninety-eighth story dies shortly after. This includes Shoji, the boyfriend of Kazami Kano. Haunted by Shoji’s death, Kazami becomes drawn to three young people connected to the writer and his work. During an intense summer, she uncovers the truth behind the ninety-eighth story and comes to see that everything that happened was “shockingly beautiful, enough to make you crazy.”
