About “Nada”

This 1945 novel by Carmen Laforet is considered one of twentieth-century Spain's most important literary works, an existentialist novel depicting the stagnation and poverty of the postwar period under early Francoism. It follows Andrea, a young orphan who moves to Barcelona just after the Spanish Civil War to study and start a new life, only to find her illusions shattered upon arriving at her grandmother's mysterious house on Calle de Aribau, where she encounters her overbearing aunt Angustias, her nihilistic but artistically gifted uncle Roman, his violent brother Juan, and Juan's wife Gloria, who secretly supports the family through gambling.
