About “Nanfang caomu zhuang”
The Nanfang caomu zhuang is a botanical text attributed to Ji Han, a scholar and botanist from the Western Jin dynasty. It is a Flora that documents the plants of Nanyue and Jiaozhi, regions that correspond to present-day South China and northern Vietnam. The text is the oldest known work in any language focused on subtropical botany. It includes the first descriptions of several economic plants, such as jasmine and black pepper, and provides the earliest known accounts of agricultural techniques, including biological pest control and the cultivation of vegetables on floating gardens.
