Weetzie Bat, approaching forty, leaves her relationship with her secret-agent lover-man Max and travels to an enchanted pink hotel in Los Angeles, where she encounters a cast of otherworldly characters including a blue-skinned receptionist, an invisible cleaning lady, a seductive fawn, and a sushi-eating mermaid. The mermaid gives her a kiss that initiates a journey of self-discovery, as Weetzie navigates her past and present in a narrative blending magic and realism.
