Instead, he discovered that the Eskimos could hear wolves communicating from five miles away, using a "Canis lupus telegraph system." Messages about the arrival of people were confirmed to be accurate. Mowat found that wolves were not overeating caribou, as the government claimed, but were controlling a mouse population that was out of control. His report was both scientifically detailed and humorously written, making the book a remarkable work.
