Viola, a widow left penniless after her husband's death, lives with her late husband's family in a joyless household marked by the tyrannical presence of Mr. Withers, the dismissive attitude of Mrs. Withers, and the distant concerns of her sisters-in-law, Madge and Tina. The impending charity ball offers her hope, particularly due to the expected attendance of Victor Spring, whose intentions toward her are not honorable.
