About “Nihon Ryōiki”
The Nihon Ryōiki is an early Heian period setsuwa collection written by Kyōkai between 787 and 824. It is Japan's oldest known collection of Buddhist setsuwa, which are narrative stories intended to convey moral or religious lessons. The work is structured in three volumes.
