About “Nil Darpan”
Nil Darpan is a Bengali-language play written by Dinabandhu Mitra in 1858–1859. The play was central to the Indigo Revolt, also known as Nil Vidroha, which took place in February–March 1859 in Bengal. Farmers protested against exploitative conditions under Company rule by refusing to grow indigo. The play also played a key role in the development of theatre in Bengal. It influenced Girish Chandra Ghosh, who later established the National Theatre in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1872. The first play commercially staged at the National Theatre was Nildarpan.
