About “North and South”
North and South is a social novel published in 1855 by English author Elizabeth Gaskell. It is one of her most recognized works, alongside Wives and Daughters and Cranford. The novel was adapted for television three times. Initially, Gaskell intended to name the novel after its heroine, Margaret Hale, but Charles Dickens, who was the editor of Household Words, the magazine where the novel was published in serial form, preferred the title North and South.
