Number the Stars by Lois Lowry follows ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend, Ellen Rosen, who live in Copenhagen in 1943. Life has changed since the war began, with food shortages and Nazi soldiers in the streets. Ellen is Jewish, and when the Nazis begin relocating Jews, she moves in with Annemarie's family and pretends to be part of it. Annemarie is given a dangerous task to help save Ellen's life, requiring her to act with courage and strength. She must complete the mission without hesitation, as there is no turning back.
