About “O Mulato”
O Mulato is a novel written by the Brazilian author Aluísio de Azevedo. It was first published in 1881 and marks the beginning of Brazilian Naturalism. The movement aimed to depict reality in a direct and unembellished manner, often highlighting overlooked aspects of society. Aluísio de Azevedo was a pioneer of this movement in Brazil, and the novel is considered one of the first naturalist works in the country. The story addresses racial discrimination in the late nineteenth century in São Luís, Maranhão. It was among the first literary works in Brazil to openly explore interracial relationships and their social and cultural effects. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
