Alexandra, daughter of a Swedish immigrant farmer in Nebraska, inherits the family farm and finds love with an old friend. The novel follows the struggles of pioneer life in the 1880s, focusing on John Bergson, a Swedish farmer who dies without achieving his goals. Alexandra, determined to honor his faith, supports her family with her strength and resilience. Her life changes when she falls in love with Carl Linstrum, but her family objects because he is poor. Carl leaves to seek a better future. After Alexandra's younger brother Emil is killed by the jealous husband of a French girl, Carl returns to marry Alexandra and join her on the farm.
