About “O Uraguai”
O Uraguai is a 1769 epic poem written by Basílio da Gama, set in the region that is now the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The poem is structured in five cantos and contains 1,377 lines. Each line is hendecasyllabic and unrhymed, making it shorter than typical epic poems. The work reflects the literary style of its time and is an important example of early Brazilian literature.
