About “Odessa Stories”

Odessa Stories is a collection of four short stories by Isaac Babel, set in Odessa during the final days of the Russian Empire and the Russian Revolution. Published individually in Soviet magazines between 1921 and 1924, the stories were later compiled into a book in 1931. The stories focus on a group of Jewish thugs living in Moldavanka, a Jewish ghetto in Odessa. Their leader, Benya Krik, known as the King, is loosely based on the real-life figure Mishka Yaponchik. The collection portrays the lives and struggles of these characters against the backdrop of historical upheaval. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
