About “Opus majus”
The Opus Majus is the most significant work of Roger Bacon, written in Medieval Latin at the request of Pope Clement IV. It was intended to explain the extensive research Bacon had conducted. The 878-page treatise covers various areas of natural science, including grammar, logic, mathematics, physics, and philosophy. Bacon submitted the work to the Pope in 1267. Later the same year, he wrote Opus Minus, a shorter work serving as a summary of Opus Majus. He also wrote Opus Tertium, which acted as an introduction to the other two works.
