Orthodoxy is G. K. Chesterton’s response to critics who said his earlier work Heretics only criticized current philosophies without offering an alternative. In it, Chesterton reflects on his intellectual journey from pagan to agnostic to positivist philosopher, where he tried to create a philosophy "some ten minutes in advance of the truth." However, when he compared his ideas with Christian theology, he realized he had rediscovered what had already been known. Orthodoxy is a Christian apologetic, in which Chesterton argues that Christianity provides a universal solution to human needs, rather than an arbitrary philosophy.
