About “Padmavat”
Padmavat is an epic poem written in 1540 by the Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. It was composed in the Awadhi language and originally written in the Persian Nastaʿlīq script. It is the oldest surviving major work in Awadhi. The poem is a piece of Sufi literature that tells an allegorical story about Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khalji's desire for Padmavati, the Queen of Chittor. Alauddin Khalji and Ratan Sen, Padmavati's husband, were historical figures, while Padmavati may have been a fictional character. The poem is based on the historic conquest of Chittor.
