A novel by Connie Willis. Dr. Joanna Lander, a psychologist who has spent two years recording the experiences of people declared clinically dead and revived, volunteers for a research project led by neurologist Dr. Richard Wright that simulates the near-death experience using a psychoactive drug. As Joanna undergoes the experience repeatedly, her sense of dread grows, because part of her already knows why the experience feels so hauntingly familiar.
