About “Penguin Island”

<Penguin Island> is a comic novel by Anatole France, published in 1908. It satirizes the history of France, from its prehistory to a distant future. The story follows St. Maël, a myopic missionary who, after a storm-tossed voyage of evangelization, lands on an island inhabited by penguins. Mistaking them for humans, he baptizes them, starting a conflict in Heaven and beginning the history of the Penguin nation.
