Set in eighteenth-century France, this novel examines what happens when one man's indulgence in his greatest passion, his sense of smell, leads to murder. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with an absolute sense of smell and apprentices himself to a perfumer, but his genius drives him to obsessively capture scents, ultimately pursuing a terrifying quest to create the 'ultimate perfume': the scent of a beautiful young virgin. It is a 1985 novel by Patrick Suskind.
