Pick-up follows two individuals—a failed painter working as a counterman in a cheap diner and a woman fleeing domestic violence—as they navigate the back streets of San Francisco. The story portrays their attempts to find a place in a world defined by nihilism, poverty, and personal destruction, marked by themes of rape, racism, alcoholism, and suicide.
