Michel Renault is a man disconnected from life, working a civil service job while living a life of isolation and superficial pleasures. After his father's death, he spends his days with prepackaged entertainment and shallow relationships. During a group trip to Thailand, he meets Valerie, a woman who challenges him and begins to change him. Back in Paris, they start an affair that includes elements of S&M and partner swapping. They also create a plan to save her failing travel company by exploiting a trade Michel has observed in the Third World. Michel leaves his job to pursue their business idea of sex tourism. When they return to Thailand, Michel faces a reality where sex is not the most powerful or dangerous force. The 2001 novel by Michel Houellebecq explores themes of alienation, desire, and the search for meaning.
