About “Proof”

"Proof" is a play written by David Auburn. It follows Catherine, a young woman who has cared for her brilliant but unstable father, Robert, for years. On the day of her twenty-fifth birthday, she deals with his death, the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire, and the attention of Hal, a former student of her father's. Hal hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks Robert left behind. As Catherine faces Hal's affections and Claire's plans for her life, she struggles to understand how much of her father's madness or genius she might inherit. The play explores the mysteries of mathematics and the unknowability of love.
