About “Ravelstein”

Abe Ravelstein is a novel by Saul Bellow about a brilliant and charismatic professor who lives extravagantly and influences political figures. After his friend Chick suggests he write a book on ideas that shape or destroy humanity, Ravelstein does so and becomes a millionaire. In return, Ravelstein asks Chick to write a memoir about him. During a trip to Paris, the two discuss mortality, philosophy, history, and personal relationships. Upon returning to the Midwest, Ravelstein contracts AIDS and dies, while Chick nearly dies as well. The story explores themes of friendship, ideas, and the passage of time.
