Ensign Andrew Dahl is assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, a prestigious posting that offers the chance to join Away Missions with the ship's senior officers. However, Andrew soon discovers that these missions always involve deadly encounters with aliens, and that junior crew members are often killed while the senior officers survive. Many crew members avoid Away Missions to stay safe. Andrew then uncovers information that changes everything, giving him and his fellow crew members a dangerous opportunity to escape their fate.
