About “Richard Carvel”

The novel follows Richard Carvel, a wealthy young man from a prominent Maryland family, set before and during the Revolutionary War. Initially based in Annapolis, the story begins with Carvel being kidnapped and sent to England by his wicked uncle to steal his inheritance. In London, he meets notable figures such as John Paul Jones and Edmund Burke, experiencing various adventures. When the war begins, Carvel joins the navy aboard a ship commanded by Jones. He takes part in the famous battle between the Bonhomme Richard and the Serapis, where he is wounded and returns to London to recover. There, he marries his childhood sweetheart and later returns to Annapolis to live. The novel was written by Winston Churchill.
