Detective Sergeant Duncan Hatcher is called to the home of Judge Cato Laird to investigate a fatal shooting in which Elise Laird, the judge's wife, claims she killed an intruder in self-defense. Duncan becomes increasingly suspicious of Elise's account, uncovering discrepancies that challenge his professional judgment, while also grappling with his growing attraction to her despite her status as a suspect and a married woman.
