About “Roman de Fauvel”
The Roman de Fauvel is a 14th-century French allegorical verse romance known for its satirical tone. It is generally attributed to Gervais du Bus, a clerk in the French royal chancery. The original work consists of 3,280 octosyllabic lines divided into two books, dated to 1310 and 1314, during the reigns of Philip IV and Louis X. A significantly expanded version was created by Chaillou de Pesstain between 1316 and 1317. The poem uses allegory to comment on contemporary society and politics.
