About “Roman de Troie”
Le Roman de Troie by Benoît de Sainte-Maure, likely written between 1155 and 1160, is a 30,000-line epic poem that retells the story of the Trojan War. It is a medieval version of the ancient myth and served as an inspiration for a group of literary works known as the roman antique. This group was later gathered by the poet Jean Bodel under the label Matter of Rome. The subject of the Trojan War, which de Sainte-Maure helped popularize, is also called the Matter of Troy.
