About “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes”

Sadako, a lively and athletic girl from Hiroshima, was the star of her school's running team. Then she began experiencing dizzy spells and was diagnosed with leukemia, known as the "atom bomb disease." Determined and brave, Sadako decided to fold one thousand paper cranes, based on a Japanese legend that said if a sick person folded a thousand cranes, the gods would grant her wish for recovery. Her story, based on a true account, is told in Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. The book honors Sadako's courage and her lasting legacy in Japan.
