Joshua Slocum, an American sea captain, was the first to circumnavigate the world alone. He built the 37-foot sloop Spray and set off from Boston in 1895. Slocum wrote about his journey with keen observation and humor, describing a powerful wave that submerged his boat during a storm. He faced pirates in Tierra del Fuego by tricking them into thinking he had crewmates. In Africa, he met explorer Henry Stanley, who questioned him about the Spray's safety features. Slocum explained that the boat was fully watertight but emphasized the need to avoid rocks and other dangers. His account of the voyage is considered an important maritime work.
