About “Samurai”

This 1980 novel by Shūsaku Endō is set in 1613, when Father Pedro Velasco's dream came true as he sailed with a small group of Japanese Samurai to Mexico, Spain, and Rome. Velasco, who knew Japanese, hoped zealously to become primate over a converted Catholic Japan, bargaining for a Catholic crusade in exchange for Japanese trading rights with the West, in a journey of incredible danger and hardship underwritten by faith.
