About “Savrola”
Savrola is Winston Churchill’s first major literary effort and his only full-length work of fiction. Published in the U.S. in 1899 and in the U.K. in 1900, the novel’s subtitle, A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania, indicates its focus on political themes. The story follows Savrola, a leader of the democratic movement in the republic of Laurania, which is under the autocratic rule of President Antonio Molara. When the electoral process is compromised, a riot erupts, leading to a struggle between Molara and Savrola for control of the nation. Molara enlists his wife, Lucille, to undermine Savrola, but she falls in love with him. In the end, Molara dies, Lucille and Savrola are together, and Laurania returns to peace.
