About “Slapstick”

The book explores Kurt Vonnegut's recurring theme of belonging to extended families as a substitute for biological ones. It follows a boy and his sister who grow up isolated because of their unsightliness; separated, they reunite and separate again, and after a catastrophe the boy becomes president of the United States on a platform of forming extended families on a grand scale. Published 1976.
