About “Speculum Maius”
The Speculum Maius or Majus was a major encyclopedia from the 13th century, written by Vincent of Beauvais. It aimed to compile all knowledge of the time. The original work was divided into three parts: the Speculum Naturale, the Speculum Doctrinale, and the Speculum Historiale. Later printed editions included a fourth part, the Speculum Morale, added in the 14th century. This part was mainly based on writings by Thomas Aquinas, Stephen of Bourbon, and other contemporary authors. The encyclopedia remained an important source of information during the Middle Ages.
