Keith Landry, a former top intelligence officer, returns to Spencerville, the small Midwestern town where he grew up, after being forced into early retirement following the end of the Cold War. In Spencerville, he reconnects with Annie Prentis, his former school sweetheart and college lover, and Cliff Baxter, the high school bully who is now the police chief and Annie's jealous and possessive husband, leading to a confrontation involving violence, vengeance, and renewed passion.
