The USS Stargazer is dispatched to investigate claims by two humanoids who say they are descendants of survivors from the SS Valiant, a starship destroyed three hundred years prior during an attempt to cross the galactic barrier. Lieutenant Commander Jean-Luc Picard, second officer on the Stargazer, becomes involved with one of the visitors, a woman with psychic abilities, as the crew faces an ambush by the hostile Nuyyad and Picard assumes command following the captain's death.
