About “Stoner”

William Stoner is born into a poor farming family in Missouri at the end of the nineteenth century. He is sent to a state university to study agronomy but instead becomes passionate about English literature, choosing an academic life over his family's expectations. Over time, Stoner faces many hardships, including a difficult marriage, a stalled career, and emotional distance from his family. He experiences a brief but intense love affair that ends in scandal. As he grows older, he becomes more isolated, finding solace in the quiet strength of his ancestors. John Williams's 1965 novel portrays Stoner as a quiet, tragic figure, embodying the struggles of an ordinary man against a harsh world.
