Nel Wright and Sula Peace are two girls who grow up to become women and friends who eventually become something worse than enemies. In Toni Morrison's novel Sula, the story follows their relationship from childhood in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Their bond is strong enough to overcome bullies and a terrible secret. It remains even as Nel becomes a respected member of the black community and Sula becomes an outcast. Their friendship ends in what seems to be an unforgivable betrayal, but the true nature of their separation remains unclear. The novel is full of life, blending terror, humor, and tragedy.
