About “Surya Siddhanta”
The Surya Siddhanta is a Sanskrit treatise on Indian astronomy, attributed to Lāṭadeva, a student of Aryabhatta I. It was written between the 4th and 9th centuries and contains fourteen chapters. The text provides rules for calculating the motions of the Sun, Moon, and five planets, using a geocentric model. It also includes estimates of their diameters and the circumference of their orbits around the Earth. The text is known from a 15th-century palm-leaf manuscript and several later versions. It was likely composed or revised around 800 CE based on an earlier version of the same name. The Surya Siddhanta is written in verse, with each line divided into two pāds of eight syllables each.
