About “Sybil, or, The Two Nations”

Benjamin Disraeli was a prominent historical figure who was born into a Jewish family but converted to Anglican Christianity as a child. He became a member of the British Parliament at age 33 and rose to prominence within the Conservative Party due to his conflicts with Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. He led the Conservative Party and served as Prime Minister for a short period in 1868 and then for an extended period between 1874 and 1880. He was appointed Earl of Beaconsfield by Queen Victoria in 1876. Disraeli also wrote political treatises and 17 novels, including Sybil, or The Two Nations, which addresses the division between the rich and the poor in Britain. The novel highlights the poor living conditions and the injustices faced by workers, as well as the rise of the Chartist movement, which sought universal male suffrage. Sybil also covers the development of the People’s Charter and the subsequent protests after Parliament rejected the petition. The novel's main plot follows Egremont, a nobleman's son who befriends Walter Gerard, a leader of the workers’ movement, and falls in love with Gerard's daughter, Sybil. Their relationship faces challenges when Egremont's true identity is revealed.
